How to Overcome the Myths That Are Keeping You From Your Dreams

You may have heard of sayings like “If you can dream it, you can do it” and “If you wish to be rich, you will be rich”.

Wise sages across the ages have taught us that we have the power to create our desires. In fact, it’s one of our main purposes here on earth – to experience the love, abundance, success, wellbeing and happiness we desire.

If we have the great and wonderful power to create our desires, why are so few people achieving their goals or living a life they love?

Instead, in the words of Henry Thoreau, most people lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.

Through my own life transformation and working with my clients, I’ve discovered some common myths that may be keeping you from achieving your dreams. Here are 8 of the most common ones.

Myth: You have to know all the steps before you begin.

Truth: You only need to see a few feet ahead.

Eric Butterworth once said: “The only decision you need to make is the decision to begin. The decision of what to do, or which way to go, should not be made. They should be discovered.”

Take a moment to think about something you have achieved in your life. Did you know every single step before you commenced the journey towards it? Or did the path unfold as you took action and moved forward?

Don’t stay stuck because you don’t know all the “hows” to achieve your dreams. Just take a few baby steps in the general direction of your goals, and trust that Universe miracles, synchronicity and your inner guide will continue to guide you each day. Spoiler alert: They sure will.

Myth: You’ll be happy once you achieve your dream life.

Truth: Being happy now will attract your desires.

Success does not bring happiness; happiness brings success.

When you make it your number one intention to feel good daily – by practicing gratitude, kindness, meditating and making time for the things you love – your loving and joyful energy will attract abundance and miracles into your life.

Remember, happiness is a state of mind. Psychology shows that we are very quick to adjust to our surroundings. We may be yearning for our soulmate, a new career or a bigger pay cheque today, but six months after we obtain them, we begin to take these blessings for granted.

The lesson is: you will never be truly fulfilled by external objects and events alone; you need to cultivate a happy and peaceful mindset and state of being.

Myth: You are going it alone.

Truth: The Universe will co-create with you.

So maybe you don’t know how to make your dreams happen and you’re wondering if you’re enough.

You – your human logical “smaller self” – is probably not enough. But guess what, beautiful soul? That’s okay. In fact, that’s perfectly natural. Because it’s not your role to make your dreams happen. It’s not your burden to have what it takes. It’s not your mission to fix every possible thing wrong with you and be perfect for 101 days in a row so that you can finally crown yourself “enough” and grant yourself permission to start shining – until you make your next misstep and start back at square one.

Your role is to get out of the way and let your Higher Self take over.

Your Higher Self knows exactly how your dreams will unfold. Your Higher Self has more than enough wisdom, ideas, inspiration, strength, courage, energy, determination, joy and love to achieve your goals and other things beyond your wildest imagination. Your Higher Self is more than enough.

And the best part? Your Higher Self is the truest part of you. You are that. So step back, relax and let the magic in.

Myth: Hard work is the key to achieving your dreams.

Truth: It is much easier to upgrade your beliefs and energy to match your dreams.

You can strive and struggle and work really hard to achieve more money, success, love or fitness, but if your mind is programmed with contradictory beliefs and thoughts, you will often find yourself spinning your wheels, unable to move beyond your current life situation.

When you shift your dominant thoughts to support your dreams, and begin to tell a new positive story about yourself and the world, you will be able to achieve your goals and desires with more ease and less effort.

As Wayne Dyer put it: “We need to be a match for what we want to attract into our lives. If we want happiness, we need to get into a state of being magnetic to positive experiences.”

Myth: There is nothing particularly special about you.

Truth: You are one-of-a-kind and you are here for a reason.

You are a divine one-of-a-kind! There has never been another person in the history of the world with your unique and magical blend of gifts, passions and quirks. You have a unique gift to give to the world that only you can give. Your light is unique and needed.

When you think about all the things that had to happen for you to be here now – your parents meeting; their parents meeting; their parents; their parents; and so on and so forth throughout all the events in history – you begin to realise you may be here for a reason. You are a miracle.

Myth: You should do what everyone else is doing.

Truth: Listen to the wisdom of your own inner voice.

C.S. Lewis said: “When the whole world is running towards a cliff, he who is running in the opposite direction appears to have lost his mind.”

Just because it’s the norm or status quo, does not mean it’s your norm, purpose or truth. Begin to tune out of the noise of the world and listen to the wisdom of your own soul.

Design your life in a way that feels right to you. Remember, your worth is not dependant on ticking off a certain number of socially acceptable achievements like having a large house, stable career and traditional marriage. When you begin to follow your heart, you will feel more alive, liberated and excited about life than ever before.

Myth: Failure is the end of the world.

Truth: There is no such thing as failure, only feedback.

Theodore Roosevelt said: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena.”

Life is for living, beautiful soul. How will you feel five years from now if you don’t listen to your heart and go after your desires? Our comfort zone feels safe and secure but it’s a trap – it doesn’t lead to long-term fulfilment as the nature of our inner spirit is to grow and expand.

Understand that there is no such thing as failure; only feedback. When you give something a go, you gain invaluable experience and lessons that will lead you to greater success.

Myth: Fear is something to be avoided at all costs.

Truth: Fear is just a temporary energy passing through our body.

Osho once wrote: “Don’t move the way fear makes you move. Move the way love makes you move. Move the way joy makes you move.”

You have a choice in life – to let fear rule or love rule. If you can’t dissolve fear completely, that’s okay. Feel the fear and move forward anyway.

Often, what we’re afraid of is not a situation or event itself – we’re afraid of experiencing the feeling of fear during this situation or event.

When we realise that fear is just energy temporarily hanging out in our body, we can learn to accept it and make peace with it. We can love, honour and accept ourselves while we feel fear, and love ourselves enough to continue the journey towards our dreams.

Don’t settle for a life which is less that you desire or deserve, beautiful soul. You are the Universe experience itself through you. Show it a good time by loving each moment, going after your true desires, and being you in every way.
